Life in an A-Frame cabin is a frequent fantasy for us here at Field Mag HQ. But it doesn't stop there—the draw of a peaceful hideaway can come in many forms, from modular backcountry hut to backcountry yurt. Blending characteristics of each, plus a healthy dose of luxe design, is the new Nokken Softshell, a new semi-permanent dwelling for off-grid living.
Founded in 2022 with a focus on selling pre-fabricated cabins and ADUs to independent owners and hospitality groups, the newest design by Europe-based Nokken delivers something entirely unique. The 190-square-foot Softshell is comprised of a lightweight timber frame, baseplate, and weather-resistant canvas cover—with optional loft netting—creating an elevated glamping tent that appears to be Nokken's first semi-permanent design.
Want a new view? Pack it up and move it to a new temporary home without leaving any evidence you were ever there. A LNT approved cabin? Sign me up.
The Softshell's front face looks quite similar to that of the Klein A45 Cabin, resembling a right triangle. That's no real surprise, given that the Softshell was made in collaboration with the team at celebrated architectural firm Bjarke Ingeles Group (BIG), who also designed the Klein A45.
Many details about the Softshell are still emerging, but Nokken is pitching the huts as flexible multi-functional spaces. As is the case for many glamping tents, there is enough room below the roof for a queen-sized bed, but also a small seating area and stove.
The canvas exterior is apparently UV-resistant and waterproof, which should allow for comfortable living in hot and wet conditions. Insulation is to be made available as an add on for those using the Softshell in the cold starting next May 2025.
Renderings show signs of the type of space maximization techniques employed in apartments like the ones in BIG's skyscraper projects, including a netted lofted area above the bed. The company has said the design is modular and customizable, suggesting the Softshell might make a great backyard studio, pop-up event venue, or, of course, as handsome accommodations for weekend getaways—or even hotel guests.
Given the pedigree, you'll be unsurprised to learn the cabins are not cheap. Though in comparison to most permanent cabin kits and prefab options, the starting price of $22,500 USD isn't that bad. The Nokken Softshell is available for pre-order with delivery expected by summer 2025.
Plenty of time to get your build site ready—and build your own wood fired hot tub to pair with it.
