At Field Mag we've been covering the latest cabin kits and innovations in escapist architecture for a decade now, from the rise of the A-frame to the Airbnb boom to tiny houses, ADUs, shipping container homes, you name it. And although many are prefabricated and modular at the start, once built, they're difficult to modify. So if you build a tiny home or micro cabin, you're stuck with it. Even if your family grows, or your life changes.
Backcountry Hut Company, the BC-based manufacturer of some of the best looking and most premium prefab cabins available, has just unveiled a clever solution to this problem. The "Bridge" is an adaptable system that allows cabin owners to unite two separate BHC structures into a single, larger living space.
While building a connective walkway between two buildings isn't exactly a newsworthy innovation, what makes the Bridge system special is that it can be integrated into a new build to connect two new cabin kits in a variety of layouts, OR it can be allow an existing BHC cabin to expand and connect to a new addition.
It's the second part that's exciting—now the square footage you choose when building isn't set in stone—you can grow your cabin as you grow (provided you can afford the not-exactly-inexpensive cost).
"The new bridge element allows clients to connect multiple Backcountry Hut structures together in a manner that maintains the compact form and architectural rigor of the original structures, while also accommodating larger programs with additional bedrooms and living spaces," explains As architect and BHC Co-Founder Michael Leckie. "It also provides hut owners with a straightforward solution for a future addition to their projects."
The Backcountry Hut Company Bridge is workable with System 01 and 02 cabins and will be available starting in 2025.
